The district court in Kiel sentenced a man who drove his car into pedestrians to four years and three months in prison on Wednesday for the negligent killing of three people and for possessing and dealing in drugs.

In addition, the court ordered the placement of the drug-addicted man in a rehabilitation center.

The twenty-six-year-old drove into a group of pedestrians in Neumünster (Schleswig-Holstein) in January 2021.

A 30-year-old woman and her 34-year-old partner died at the scene of the accident.

Both were police officers.

The woman's younger sister succumbed to her injuries a few days later.

According to the court ruling, the man's journey was linked to drug trafficking.

With its verdict, the court largely followed the request of the public prosecutor;

the defense attorneys had pleaded for a maximum of three years in prison.

The defendant remained silent during the trial.

Only on the last day of the trial did he apologize in a final word to the survivors, who acted as joint plaintiffs, and said that he would like to reverse the day.
