Angelina Jolie submits her resignation

After more than 20 years of dedicated work, Angelina Jolie has resigned from her mission as a special envoy for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, wanting to “work with different parties” and on broader humanitarian issues, according to the world famous star.

"After 20 years of working alongside the United Nations, I feel it is time to work with others, and to engage directly with refugees and local organisations," the actress said in a statement issued by UNHCR on Friday.

"I will continue to do what I can over the coming years to support refugees and other displaced people," she added.

For his part, UNHCR President Filippo Grandi affirmed that “Angelina Jolie has long been an outstanding partner of UNHCR in humanitarian matters,” adding, “We are grateful to her for her commitment to us over the decades and for the difference she has made to refugees and those forced to flee their countries.”

Jolie, who is one of the most famous stars in Hollywood, has completed more than 60 field missions over the years, taking advantage of her fame and attracting the media during her missions, in favor of the refugee cause.

Jolie did not give details of her future humanitarian commitments.

For his part, Grandi said, "I realize that the refugee issue will remain dear to her heart, and I am sure that it will carry the same passion as a body working on humanitarian issues."

Jolie began working with UNHCR in 2001, and was named its Goodwill Ambassador in 2012.
