Hollywood star Angelina Jolie is giving up her honorary post as a special envoy for the UN refugee agency UNHCR after ten years.

The US actress wants to get involved in a broader range of issues in the future, Jolie and the UNHCR said on Friday.

She will work directly with local organizations to also campaign for humanitarian aid and human rights.

"I will continue to do everything I can to support refugees and internally displaced people."

Jolie had worked with UNHCR since 2001.

In the same year she was appointed special envoy, and in 2021 special envoy.

In this role, the 47-year-old drew attention to less noticed crises, such as recent trips to Yemen and Burkina Faso.

UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi thanked Jolie on Friday for decades of service and her commitment to making a positive difference to refugees.

The two-time Oscar winner (“Crazy”, “The Stranger Son”) is known for her humanitarian commitment.

The trigger is said to have been the shooting of the film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in largely mined Kamdoscha in 2000, where she first came into contact with humanitarian problems herself.

At the time, the actress contacted the UNHCR and visited various refugee camps in the months that followed.

Jolie traveled to Ukraine in May this year and visited flood victims in Pakistan in September.
