On December 9, Zhong Nanshan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, gave a speech on the theme of "New Crown (Omicron) Epidemic Trends and Response" at the Chinese Medical Association Respiratory Disease Annual Conference-2022 23rd National Respiratory Disease Academic Conference online.

Zhong Nanshan said that compared with the Delta strain, the Omicron strain has a lower risk of causing sequelae of the new crown, but this will take time to test.

Compared with the epidemic period of the Delta strain, the incidence of common symptoms (including loss of taste/smell, cough, fever, shortness of breath, etc.) decreased during the epidemic period of the Omicron strain, but the proportion of sore throat increased .

A large Scottish cohort study showed that asymptomatic infections have basically no sequelae of new crowns.

Symptomatic infection had a higher risk of sequelae, and there was no significant association between asymptomatic infection and sequelae.

At the same time, patients who were vaccinated before infection had a reduced risk of sequelae, such as a 42% reduction in the risk of smell disorders and a 39% reduction in the risk of taste disorders.
