"Like the Oscars, but only foreign films".

So joked the presenters when the European film awards kicked off on the Icelandic Saturday night - far from Hollywood.

Who would be the main character of the gala could already be guessed at the preliminary inspection of the nomination list.

Ruben Östlund - who left Cannes this summer with a Palme d'Or in his luggage - had his film "Triangle of sadness" nominated in four categories.

Awarded the award

The evening started well for Östlund when he was awarded the prize for best director, among other things in competition with the Swedish-Iranian "Holy spider" director Ali Abbasi.

- I want to dedicate the award to Charlbi Dean, said Östlund in his acceptance speech.

The South African actor and model Dean, who has a leading role in "Triangle of sadness", died on August 29 this year, just before the film's international premiere.

Östlund also won the award for best screenplay – again in competition with Ali Abbasi.

- This is the "Triangle of sadness" evening, Östlund confirmed from the stage.

And that was it, the streak continued.

Zlatko Buric, who plays a Russian oligarch in the film, was awarded the award for best male actor.

In the end, best film also went to "Triangle of sadness", as if out of nowhere.

Internal matter

The film was also nominated for the separate university prize EUFA, where European film students make up the jury, but there it failed.

That award was already presented last Friday.

Ruben Östlund said before the gala that all the nominations feel fun, but that this event is a rather internal matter.

- Mainly this means something to me and my colleagues in the European film community, but we are fighting for it to get more attention outside the industry and against the Oscars getting so much attention, Östlund told TT.
