The commune of Cusset (Allier) plans to equip its municipal police officers with firearms.

The subject was discussed at the city council on Wednesday, reports

La Montagne

.

At present, the city's five municipal police officers are equipped with stun guns, self-defense sprays and telescopic batons.

The text, adopted on Wednesday, thus plans to equip them with semi-automatic pistols.

The reason mentioned by the agents, at the origin of this request, is none other than the growing local delinquency.

"Our municipal police must be able to protect themselves," said the mayor.

The system could be put in place during 2023. The agents will have to be trained.

“It will not be the Wild West”

Unsurprisingly, positions differ greatly on this convention.

During the municipal council, the opposition affirmed that this decision illustrated a “confusion between security and public peace”.

She also raised the issue of the dangerousness of weapons.

“It will not be the Wild West in Cusset.

(…) And we also hope that the agents will not have to use it, ”replied the mayor.
