The historic center of Rennes may be charming with its half-timbered buildings, but it remains fragile with some buildings that have been very degraded by the weight of the years.

This Wednesday morning a little before 10 a.m., a major fire brigade was triggered at number 6 Place du Champ Jacquet.

It was the tenants of the only apartment in this building who sounded the alarm when they heard the ceiling beam creak and then collapse.

Twenty-seven firefighters, including a rescue-clearance team, immediately went to the site to consolidate the structure and establish a safety perimeter.

A safeguard plan for the old center

The two neighboring buildings were evacuated as a precaution as well as a business located on the ground floor.

The operation is still in progress this Wednesday afternoon with a building expert who is on site to assess the dangerousness of the situation.

Monday evening, the city council of Rennes had adopted phase 3 of the plan to safeguard the historic center initiated in 2010. At the time, an alarming report reported 600 very degraded buildings in the sector.

In ten years, 240 of the most deteriorated buildings have thus been completely renovated.

The city now wants to treat 100 more by 2030.
