"It is with sadness that we inform you that our amazing, strong and loving mother has

passed away following a battle with recently discovered cancer

," her children Lillie Price Stevenson and William True Stevenson said in a statement.

Alley rose to fame for her role as Rebecca Howe on the NBC sitcom

, which earned her an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 1991.

The artist received a

for her performance in the television movie

A Very Special Sweetheart.

Alley also starred in the 1989 romantic comedy

Look Who's Talking

, and its two sequels, opposite John Travolta.

Travolta paid tribute to the actress Monday night by posting a photo of Alley in her youth on his Instagram account.

"Kirstie was one of the most special relationships I've ever had," Travolta said.

"I love you Kirstie. I know we'll see each other again."
