As part of the activities of the Sharjah Program as Guest of Honor for the 36th edition of the Guadalajara International Book Fair, Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairwoman of the International Publishers Association, Founder and Honorary President of the UAE Council on Books for Young People, in the Mexican city of Guadalajara, inaugurated the “Sheep in Contemporary Vision” exhibition organized by the UAE Council on Books for Young People and the Council. The Mexican Books for Young People in cooperation with the Museum of the City of Guadalajara in Mexico and the House of Wisdom in Sharjah.

The exhibition “Autumn with a Contemporary Vision” was launched for the first time on the sidelines of the Bologna International Children’s Book Fair in Italy last March, and was highly praised by visitors.

In its new edition, the exhibition seeks to promote cultural dialogue and the exchange of creative ideas between the UAE and Mexico. Five Emirati artists re-imagined Mexican myths and folk tales and painted them with a new vision, while five Mexican artists drew five Emirati folk tales from a modern angle.

The cultural project, which invites illustrators from two different cultures to reimagine the folk tales of the other culture, was launched within the creative partnerships during the “Sharjah World Book Capital 2019” program.

The joint exhibition presents a new generation of painters who retell traditional stories from the distant past from their point of view and personal experiences, in an intercultural artistic dialogue that includes a mixture of original ideas, visions and expressions that embody the social and cultural values ​​of the UAE and Mexico.

The exhibition’s drawings included legendary figures from the Emirati heritage, including the story of “Umm Al-Hilan”, the envious woman who spreads enmity and hatred, drawn by the artist Juan Guidovius, who created drawings for 90 books in several languages, and the story of “Al-Salawah”, the creature that resembles a woman and covers his body with gorilla-like hair, drawn by Guillermo de Ghante is specialized in illustrations for children's books, magazines and newspapers.

The exhibition presented a reading of the rich Mexican culture, which was influenced by the cultures of Europe and Central America, through the eyes of Emirati artists and through their creative imagination, including the artist Abdullah Al Sharhan, who was introduced to children’s books through the UAE Board on Books for Young People, wrote and drew more than 12 books, and participated in the exhibition with drawings dealing with the story “The Legend of the Sparrow.” Hummingbird, which embodies the meanings of love and sympathy in Mexican culture.

The artist, Aisha Saif Al-Hamrani, re-imagined the story of the two volcanoes “Popocatépetil” and “Iztachual”, as the first means the mountain of smoke, and the second the sleeping woman, and translated folk tales into visual art that inspires others.

While the artist Mohammed Al-Junaibi presented his vision of the story of "The Bat", which imagines the origin of the nocturnal animal as the most beautiful bird in the world.

The artist, Issa Al-Nuaimi, known as Issa Black Johar, presented the story "The Legend of Corn: The Ant That Fed the Man."

While the Emirati artist, Nasser Nasrallah, detailed the story of “The Opossum and the Fire.”

The exhibition “Autumn in a Contemporary Vision” employed the story of “Khataf Raffai” the genie who dreamed of becoming a sailor, drawn by the artist Valeria Gayo, the story of “Shang bin Anaq”, the giant of the earth, drawn by the artist Amanda Mijangos, and the story of “Sweida Khasf”, the black palm fronds drawn by the winning artist. Armando Fonseca won several international awards, who was honored in the UAE during the activities of the Sharjah Children's Reading Festival 2022.
