Harvesting of sugarcane used for Tokushima traditional high-class sugar "Awa Wasanbon sugar" is actively carried out in Awa City, Tokushima Prefecture.

The sugar factory in Awa City cultivates sugar cane called `` Chikuto '' used for `` Awa Wasanbon sugar '' in a field of about 60 ares, and harvesting started last week.

The sugar cane, which has grown to a height of about 2 meters, is harvested from the roots with a sickle, peeled with a special machine, and bundled.

According to the sugar factory, a large amount of sugar cane fell down in the typhoon this year, so the harvest is expected to decrease to about two-thirds of the usual year, but it is likely that high-quality Wasanbon sugar will be produced as usual.

The sugar factory will harvest sugar cane until around the 10th of this month, and then boil down the squeezed juice to make a raw material called "shiroshitato".

Shigeki Hattori, President of the Sugar Refinery, said, "Bamboo sugar is sensitive to wind and takes a lot of time and effort to cultivate, but it has a refreshing aftertaste and just the right amount of sweetness. We deliver wasanbon, which is rich in flavor, while maintaining the traditional manufacturing method. I want to."
