  • Today, a novel in the “teen fiction” category (12-17 years old), “They came from the cold” by Caryl Férey, published on May 5, 2022 by Editions Pocket jeunesse.

Anne-So "Echos de Mots", blogger, bookstagramer and contributor to the 20 Minutes Books reading group, recommends

They came from the cold

by Caryl Férey, published on May 5, 2022 by Éditions Pocket jeunesse and selected among the Nuggets for the best novel teenager (12-17 years old) at the Book and Youth Press Fair, from November 30 to December 5 in Montreuil.

His favorite quote:

Flakes like razor blades, ever more violent swirls, an unbroken blur in the sticky white of the sky mixed with the earth, but still no trace of his mother.

Time passed again, uncertain.

Ilia was in despair, her lungs pounding, when he stumbled against a figure cowering under a thin layer of snow.

Why this book?

  • Because this initiatory teen novel, signed Caryl Férey,

    is part of the selection of Pépites 2022, a prize at the Salon du livre et de la presse jeunesse.

    We meet several characters from various Clans all with the same goal: to try to survive in a hostile nature and live in a group to have the best possible chance of getting out.

  • Because we ultimately know very little about the period

    in which the novel takes place;

    simply that the facts take place years after The Catastrophe.

    When Ilia, son of the leader of the Southern Clan, is separated from his group for tragic reasons, he meets Snow, a strong-willed teenager, an orphan of the RiverClan.

    Soon, these two will have to team up to survive despite their differences.

  • Because once separated, our two heroes

    will have to face multiple dangers;

    especially the outbursts of Mother Nature as well as this immense clan with faces made up of black which reduces men and women to slavery to make them work in the mines.

  • Because this novel will appeal to fans

    of postapocalyptic universes.

    The bonds of blood and those of heart are of great importance in this story where friendship and love are strong supports to withstand the cold, hunger and suffering.

    The message conveyed is interesting and the end is surprising.

    The author gives us an unadorned portrait of a humanity that can be as beautiful as it is terribly violent.
