December is the month of the frenzied race for Christmas gifts, where we pull out hats and scarves from the closet and… from the retrospective of the past year.

As you take stock of the 2022 resolutions that you have not kept - unless you are not really human and stick to them - the music streaming platform Spotify reveals its "wrapped", the retrospective of trends listening for the past year in France.

With a clear trend: rap dominates and women lag behind in general trends.

So who are the most streamed artists, titles and albums on the platform?

Could this ranking change in the years to come?

20 Minutes

takes stock.

JuL at the top in a very rap ranking

For the second year in a row, it is the rapper JuL who has accumulated the most listens in 2022 with more than 4 million streams for the past year.

With 26 albums on the clock, including two this year, the Marseillais has put all the chances on his side to win.

Among the general top 10 of the most listened to artists in France are only French rappers, with the exception of The Weeknd who occupies the ninth position.

Behind Jul, it is Ninho who occupies the second place of the podium followed by Gazo.

Damso, PNL, Naps, Orelsan, Tiakola and Nekfeu complete the ranking.

Rap also dominates in terms of titles and albums with the most streams in 2022. In both rankings, it is the title and its eponymous album

Jefe

, by rapper Ninho, which occupies pole position.

Both for the most listened to songs - Harry Styles with

As it was

in eighth position - and for the albums -

Equal

by Ed Sheeran comes in seventh place - only an international artist is doing well.

Angèle dethrones Dua Lipa

Not a woman has managed to interfere among the ten most listened to artists.

To find out the most listened to female artist in 2022, the streaming application has established a top 10 exclusively reserved for women.

And the most listened to singer in France is… Belgian.

With the release of his album

Nonante-five

at the end of 2021, the Belgian artist managed to steal the first place occupied by Dua Lipa last year.

The one with whom Angèle shares the

Fever

title occupies the second position, followed by Aya Nakamura.

With the exception of Angèle and Aya Nakamura, the female ranking is only made up of Anglo-Saxon artists since it is Rihanna, Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Rosalia, Doja Cat and Beyoncé who complete the ranking.

"But we can clearly see that Angèle is a French-speaking artist who exports herself enormously since after France and Belgium, it is in the United States and Brazil that she is most listened to", specifies Nicolas Du Roy, editorial director of Spotify France.

To remedy the lack of visibility of female artists on its platform and in the music industry, Spotify launched EQUAL in 2021. This playlist highlights established or emerging female artists such as November Ultra, Emma Peters, Chilla and Apple.

Mylène Farmer, who has just released

L'emprise

, will be the face of this playlist for the month of December.

Who will manage to dethrone rap?

Ultra-dominant among the most listened to titles, albums and artists in France, rap is once again at the top of the 2022 rankings. It is therefore difficult for women but also for other musical genres to exist in the face of the millions plays that this genre accumulates, a symptom of a young and rather uniform audience of the streaming platform.

However, the trend could change in the years to come according to Nicolas Du Roy.

"We have seen for almost five years new users over the age of 25 arriving on our platform," he says.

We observe a growth in the rankings of heritage artists such as Julien Clerc or Florent Pagny.

He predicts "greater diversity in rankings" in the coming years.
