In 2021, around 662,100 people were finally convicted by German courts.

As the Federal Statistical Office announced on Wednesday, there were around 37,200 convicts or 5.3 percent fewer than in the previous year.

The downward trend that has been trending for years has thus continued.

As in previous years, fines were imposed particularly frequently, against 524,600 accused.

This corresponds to 79.2 percent of all final convictions.

In almost 100,000 cases, the courts imposed prison sentences.
