• The Montreuil Youth Book Fair opened this Wednesday.

  • The five Pépites, rewarding the best books of the year, have been awarded.

  • Marine Schneider's illustrated album "Hekla et Laki" won the Golden Nugget, the supreme award.

As during the conquest of the West, the Nugget is the most popular award in children's literature.

And among the some 20,000 titles published each year, only a handful of them are entitled to it at the Youth Book Fair which opened this Wednesday in Montreuil.

Five exactly, crowning a junior novel, a teenage novel, a youth comic book and an illustrated album.

In this little game, the big winner is this year (drum roll)…

Hekla and Laki

by Marine Schneider, published by Albin Michel Jeunesse.

Inspired by the landscapes of Iceland

A beautiful 60-page large-format album, with two heroes, a whirling, glowing child, and his much less dashing ancestor, painted in blue-gray hues, in a setting inspired by his author from the landscapes of Iceland.

“We appreciated the poetry that emerges from this very beautiful book, confides the president of the jury Emile Bravo to

20 Minutes

.

With illustrations and very mineral colors, the child symbolizing the volcano in activity while his eldest rather evokes an extinct volcano.

You can also see a small drop of molten lava versus a cooled lava rock.

What age group does Emile Bravo intend it for?

“Oh dear, but to everyone!

In any case, it speaks to the child that I was and no doubt still am.
