A "cigarette" saves a person from a tragic accident in Cameroon

A cigarette break marked the line between life and death for Makolo Doss, who stepped away from a memorial ceremony to smoke his cigarette in private, when suddenly a mass of earth collapsed on the others.

Fifteen people attending the ceremony were killed in the Cameroonian capital, Yaoundé, yesterday, by a landslide, while a group of their departed loved ones were commemorated with drums and dances.

"I got away with death by a second," Doss said, still in shock.

The ceremony was held on a football field bordered by a slope.

Doss said he was moving away from other attendees to avoid smoking too close to them when he heard the sound of part of the wall collapsing.

'I turned suddenly, and looked where I was sitting,' he said, 'but I could see neither the audience nor the chairs.

They were buried under the soil.”
