A great controversy was known in the political debate in the American capital, and outside it, about the most important results of the midterm elections, which resulted in the Democrats winning a narrow majority in the Senate, and the Republicans with a simple majority in the House of Representatives.

Some considered the election results disappointing the Republicans, and the dominance of former President Donald Trump over them, and others highlighted the Democrats' success in avoiding a major electoral defeat.

However, the most important outcome of all - in my view - is the return of the American people's confidence in the electoral process itself, and the realization of millions of Americans that the institutions of their political system are solid and respected by them.

During the past weeks up to November 8, 50 states held elections for thousands of local offices, and for their representatives in both houses of Congress, and nearly 150 million voters cast their votes, and waited for the results to appear in a civilized manner.

Post-election experience - especially the storming of the Capitol by Trump supporters, and Trump's continued refusal to concede his defeat - confirmed that the office of president is a temporary position that expires at a specified date, at 12:01 p.m. on January 20, 2021, and it was not constitutionally possible. Trump would remain president any minute after that time

America is a big and contradictory place, and many Americans view their political system as fragile and threatened with extinction.

At the same time, many around the world are ignorant of the nature of the bond that binds Americans together.

Hence, it was not surprising that many experts around the world expected the collapse of the American political system since the founding of the Republic at the end of the eighteenth century, and the continuation of these expectations until now.

However, reality proves the strength of the American political system, at a time when Americans sanctify their constitution despite its negative aspects.

Over its short 250-year history, the American experience has not known any interruption in its constitutional work.

America has known one constitution that it developed throughout its history, and despite what the United States witnessed in terms of turmoil, fierce civil war, global challenges, and an endless war, the American political system did not know any desire to overthrow the governing rules of the constitution, rather it knew flexibility that many contemporary political systems do not know. .

Of course, the American political process knows huge controversial issues on many important issues socially, economically, politically and culturally, amid unprecedented polarization that contributed to the technology revolution for which human societies were not well prepared.

Two years ago, the 2020 elections dealt a heavy blow to the credibility of the elections in the United States, and inflicted much damage on the domestic level and on the image and prestige of the United States around the world.

Those elections knew the darkest and most extreme scenarios, with President Donald Trump rejecting the election results that would make him a former president, but the federal and higher local courts and legislative assemblies of the various states refused to succumb to pressure from Trump and his supporters who considered that the elections were rigged and that Trump won the elections.

Post-election experience - especially the storming of the Capitol by Trump supporters on January 6, 2021, and Trump's continued refusal to concede his defeat - confirmed that the position of president is a temporary position that expires at a specific date, at 12:01 p.m. on January 20. The second is 2021, and it was not constitutionally possible for Trump to remain president any minute after that time.

Although many federal court judges are appointed and chosen by the president, attempts to politicize the judiciary to favor one candidate over another have failed miserably, making those who wish to resort to the judiciary think a lot before taking this step.

The courts - especially the Supreme Court - are trying to distance themselves from election issues that they see as a purely political matter subject to the wishes of the voters.

Trump appointed the largest number of federal judges in modern history, and also appointed 3 Supreme Court judges, but nevertheless the judiciary stopped, rejecting all his pressures and efforts to change the election results through the courts.

Commentators scrambled to stress that America's image has been shaken around the world due to the 2020 elections, but I see - on the contrary - that what America and the world witnessed and is witnessing represents a unique and continuous democratic lesson.

With the worst scenarios that can be imagined, in which the president rejects the election results, we see that he has nothing to do with the rule of law, the sanctity of the constitution, and respect for the wishes of the voters.

Soon, confidence in the electoral process returned, and the 2022 elections did not witness major challenges from the losing candidates, despite their ideological and partisan diversity.

Trust has returned among Americans in the electoral process as a preferred means for choosing their representatives and rulers, especially with the widespread awareness that there is no better equation than frequent free and fair elections as a pillar of the most powerful political system in today's world.
