Two children aged six and nine died in a fire in a building in Onet-le-Château (Aveyron) this Saturday morning, we learned from the Rodez prosecutor's office.

The fire started on the first floor of a building in this city located on the outskirts of Rodez, noted an AFP correspondent.

Firefighters were alerted shortly before 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

The residents of the building and its surroundings were evacuated due to the smoke.

Inside the apartment, the emergency services explain that they found the two children, aged six and nine, "in cardiopulmonary arrest".

They were then taken care of by the SMUR, which was unable to revive them.

An investigation has been opened to find out the causes of the fire, the prosecution said.
