More and more companies in Germany are having difficulties filling vacancies in information technology (IT).

At the same time, IT security incidents are increasing.

About every tenth company with at least ten employees and its own IT specialists had advertised IT positions last year, more than three quarters of these companies had problems with the occupation, as the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden announced on Friday.

This proportion has increased significantly since 2016.

At that time, 58 percent of companies with their own IT specialists complained about problems in filling vacancies.

In 2019 it was 66 percent, as the statisticians further reported.

Only nine percent of companies reported IT security incidents in 2018.

In 2021 it was 15 percent of companies with at least ten employees.

The most frequently cited consequence of these incidents was the unavailability of IT services due to hardware or software errors, as the statisticians reported.

Almost a third of the companies have taken out insurance against IT security incidents.

In 2018, this proportion was only one fifth.

The results come from the annual survey on the use of information and communication technologies in companies.
