The oldest living cat in the world is almost as old as its new owner.

At 26 years and 329 days, Flossie holds the record, the Guinness Book of World Records announced on Thursday.

"I knew from the start that Flossie was a special cat, but I never thought I would be sharing my home with a world record holder," said Vicki Green, 27, from Orpington, south-east London.

"She's deaf and her eyesight is failing, but that doesn't seem to bother her."

Flossie is at least 120 in human years, said Naomi Rosling of the animal welfare organization Cats Protection.

Guinness World Records editor-in-chief Craig Glenday compared the cat to Jeanne Calment.

At 122 years and 164 days, the French woman is believed to be the oldest person to have ever lived.

In order to get the record as the oldest cat in history, Flossie still has to hold out for some time: Creme Puff holds this record – the American cat was 38 years and 3 days old.
