A 5.6 magnitude earthquake has killed at least two people in Indonesia.

Several houses were also badly damaged.

The earthquake happened on Monday afternoon (local time) near the capital Jakarta on the island of Java.

The epicenter was a few kilometers southwest of the town of Cianjur.

The victims died when their homes collapsed, according to the national civil protection agency.

Four other people in Cianjur were injured.

The earthquake was also clearly felt in Jakarta itself.

High-rise buildings swayed, however no major damage was reported.

According to the US Earthquake Monitor (USGS), the quake took place at a depth of ten kilometers.

There was no tsunami warning.

The island nation of Indonesia lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the most geologically active zone on earth.

Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are common there.
