The east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is bereaved by a natural disaster.

At least twenty people have died in the past two days in landslides and floods caused by heavy rains, we learned on Saturday from administrative and police sources.

Most of the deaths - at least thirteen - have so far been recorded on Friday at an artisanal gold mining site in Rubaya, Masisi territory (North Kivu).

"The victims are 'diggers' who were in wells and people who were around," said Jean-Paul Barindikije, secretary of an association of artisanal miners (diggers).

“Several other people are still buried under the ground, the search continues,” he added.

A family decimated by a landslide

On Saturday, the rain caused the collapse of houses in the center of Rubaya.

Police say the death toll is five.

According to a resident, a mother and her four children were swept away.

In the locality of Bihambwe, about 5 km from Rubaya, "three people from the same family were swept away by the waters of the river", also indicated Kambale Muhindo, police commander.
