The Spanish chef based in Puerto Rico Enrique Garcerán died in a

traffic accident

on one of the main avenues of Ponce, a municipality in the west of the island, the local Police reported Wednesday.

As detailed by the authorities in a report, Garcerán, 34, was driving around 11:03 p.m. (03:03 GMT) on Tuesday a vehicle

at a speed that did not allow him to control the steering wheel

, hitting a tree and then a gate of a residence.

Enrique Garcerán suffered

serious injuries

that caused his death on the spot.

Garcerán arrived in Ponce in 2018 to direct the kitchen

of the Baleares restaurant at the Hotel Meliá

, where he fused Mediterranean and Caribbean food.

In addition, he worked in the kitchen of the restaurant Níspero Asador, Vinos & Coctelería, whose administrator, Javier Bustillo, mourned the death of Garcerán.

"Our deepest condolences to his family and friends," Bustillo said in a post from the restaurant on Facebook.

"Enrique, your passion for cooking, your insatiable thirst and love for work allowed you to win the hearts of your guests.

Your determination and leadership took you all over the world

, leaving a mark on each continent you visited," he added.

"We will always remember you and appreciate your contribution to the gastronomic industry of Puerto Rico. Rest in peace, Chef Garcerán," he said.
