A tragedy struck Reunion Island on Saturday evening.

Two people died and at least one other was injured in a fire, of still undetermined origin, which occurred in a clinic in Saint-Pierre, the prefecture announced.

The disaster was declared around 8 p.m. in one of the buildings of the Bethesda clinic, while 94 people were on site, said the prefecture.

According to the public channel Réunion la 1ère, firefighters evacuated 85 people and managed to control the fire.

A person transferred to the CHU

In addition to the two people who died, one person was injured and transferred to the university hospital center (CHU), while a police officer and six clinic staff were inconvenienced by the fumes, according to an initial report.

An investigation was opened by the Saint-Pierre prosecutor's office to determine the causes of the fire and entrusted to the departmental security.

The disaster was caused by a patient who set fire to his room, according to the first elements of the investigation cited by Réunion la 1ère.
