A 56-year-old hunter died, shot and killed during a hunting trip in the Monieux forest near Carpentras (Vaucluse), the gendarmerie said on Sunday, citing an accident.
The hunter who fired the shot was placed in police custody as part of the investigation opened for "manslaughter" in order to clarify "the causes of death", said the prosecution of Carpentras.
“The two men were hunting together, one wanted to shoot a deer and hit” the victim on the back with a shotgun, explained the gendarmerie alerted at 4:20 p.m. Sunday.
"The firefighters tried to rescue" the man who had been shot and was still alive when the police and emergency services arrived, in vain, the same source said.
