• Cannes directors' fortnight embraces the torrential debut of Elena López Riera with 'El agua'

  • Cannes Premier 'As bestas' culminates Sorogoyen's journey into the soul of a cinema as tense as it is illuminated

Once upon a time there was a bottle.

A bottle is the best way to start a story.

In the stories, chaos first reigns until, suddenly, everything is ordered, the hero redeems himself and the villains receive their punishment.

A punishment is what fell on

San Bartolomé, a district of Orihuela,

on a day in September 2019 in which the DANA, the cold drop, swept everything away in a strange and brutal celebration of fury and water.

Water

is the film by

Elena López Riera

that has just hit theaters, dazzling and happy, like a torrent.

Like a bottle.

“I met Elena”,

says Luna Pamiés,

“when she was barely 15 years old.

Now I'm 18. She was partying at parties in my town.

And she passed.

She was not in a bottle.

She was looking for people for a movie.

She gave me her number and she told me to go to a casting.

But I didn't show up.

I panicked.

"How am I going to make a movie?"

I said to myself».

The one who speaks is the protagonist of, in effect,

El agua

, the film that is story, torrent, fury, chaos and, of course, bottle.

"Then," he continues, "they went to my institute.

But I wasn't.

All the girls talked about the casting.

For a moment, I thought I was haunted by the movie."

And he continues: «One day my father got up and told me: "Come on, let's go somewhere".

We went to La Condomina, which is a shopping center, and the people from the movie were there again looking for people.

My father cheated on me, but he was hopeless.

It was fate."

And Luna Pamiés, who met Elena in a bottle, ended up becoming an actress.

And even star.

A story.

A bottle.

"The person I was looking for would never show up for a casting"

.

The director speaks now.

The one that was not in a bottle.

"And that's why we searched the street, in the nightclubs... It was more than a year and a half of gleaning on the street," she continues.

And it was to find her, with Luna, and everything made sense.

“You go after a ghost and you don't realize exactly what you want until you find it.

It may sound cheesy, but it has a lot of passionate love, because of how mysterious it attracts.

It is clear.

Or not.

"What why her?

For the determination that she shows from the fragility.

Magnetic and silent as well as a whirlwind”, concludes López Riera.

El agua

tells the story of a young woman trapped between her mother's shadow and the labyrinth of a town from which she must flee.

Escape to perhaps return, but escape after all.

And in the middle, the electrical threat of a storm that exists to destroy everything.

Adolescence, or just youth, like a wild river

that admits neither ditches nor order.

Just random.

The water falls from the sky to discuss the force of gravity to the earth.

Water, moreover, is a woman.

The actress Luna Pamiés, protagonist of 'El agua'. Alberto Di LolliMUNDO

"Actually, her story is my story," says Luna.

«Like my character, I am also a rebel, it is difficult for me to pay attention.

Like her, I too would like to leave a place where there really isn't much to do.

Now I'm going to live in Alicante with my boyfriend Román », she adds and Román, who is next to her, nods.

«My idea is to finish the baccalaureate of arts and try to dedicate myself to this, to the cinema.

Before, I was a bit lost.

I was studying ESO and a hairdressing and aesthetics module.

But I didn't really know what to do with my life.

Until I met Elena and she has passed all this ».

Everything that has happened, in truth, has not happened at all.

The tale, so to speak, has only just begun.

In the last edition of Cannes,

El agua

appeared as the only Spanish film in the section known as

Directors' Fortnight

.

impressed.

Its clarity surprised and overwhelmed the self-confidence as resolute as slightly insolent of a Moon that directly devours the camera.

«We read poems, we saw bits of film and we improvised.

We did all of this on the tatami of a karate club and in the little garden next to my house where we rehearsed every day », he recalls.

Water

is a film that has a lot that is random, magical, completely wrong, even catastrophic, and yet completely true, irrefutable.

It is cinema that is built on doubt, on the anger of a storm, on what flows, on the life cycle of an unfathomable flood, on the myth of a land of women who are water and of water enclosed in a woman's body. .

“In Vega Baja we are very much our own.

There, they can give you the evil eye.

But unintentionally.

It's like healthy envy.

It is said that another person carelessly sucks your energy.

It is a tradition among women.

The evil eye is removed with a prayer on Good Friday between 12 and 1.

With a prayer and with water, oil and salt.

You can also put the sun on your head.

Then you have to put a bucket with boiling water and a pot upside down with two sticks in the shape of a cross.

And when the pot absorbs all the water, you're supposed to no longer have the sun on your head."

Legend intersects with life in Luna's story as myth does with fiction in

El agua.

Luna tells that she wants to be an actress.

She tells Luna that she has two sisters.

«One by father and mother and another by father alone.

The 15-year-old named Ángela and the other, 8, Isabela ».

She tells that she tells.

She tells as in a story, as in a storm, as in the water.

Luna says that it all started three years ago.

In a bottle.
