  • Today, "An army of my own" by Anthony Combrexelle published on September 15, 2022 by Editions 404.

Anne-So "Echos de Mots", blogger, bookstagrammer and contributor to the 20 Minutes Books reading group, recommends

An army to me alone

by Anthony Combrexelle, published on September 15, 2022 by Éditions 404.

His favorite quote:

Honey, we're in Los Angeles, Claudia cut off.

We're in a time when aliens, Roswell and Area 51 are cheesy;

where the Illuminati, Reptilians, Masonic conspiracies and the New World Order are almost out of fashion;

where every day there is talk of conspiracies by Big Pharma to file us and kill us through drugs and where the fantasy of satanist networks returns cyclically to excite the spirits.

We could film the appearance of God in the twists and turns of our burger salad that people would wonder how we faked the video and who we really roll for.

We live in a time when we can say everything and its opposite, without having to argue.

Why this book?

  • Because

    An Army of My Own

    tells us the crazy odyssey

    of Cléo, 19, whose life is turned upside down when she is attacked, one evening, by a ghostly and terrifying killer.

    Three people then come to his aid: an old woman, a forty-something, and a little girl wearing a dinosaur mask and having a strong penchant for firearms.

    Their common point: all three look exactly like him.

    She does not have time to look into the subject because following her rescue, Cleo is run over by a car and dies… before coming back to life.

  • Because the trio of lookalikes will end up explaining everything to our heroine

    and neither she nor the readers could have expected such a story.

    An eventful journey will then begin and the universe and the certainties of our resolutely modern and reckless heroine will be turned upside down by discoveries with terrifying stakes, an interesting mythology and, above all, a millennial war of which she would never have suspected the existence.

  • Because this novel is full of references to pop culture

    and inhabited by heroines in the era of time all as sarcastic, stubborn and courageous as each other.

    If this story does not lack action, revelations and twists, the author also takes his time to build his plot, work on the past and the psychology of his characters and depict the universe that surrounds them.

    Thus, the novel is dense and takes its time in the narration to increase the suspense until its epic and stunning finale.

  • Because the author, Anthony Combrexelle, handles words

    with great talent by sharing with us a multi-faceted pen, all controlled, sometimes funny, sometimes grating, often poetic and always effective.

    The result: a supercharged novel that makes us go through all the emotions and proves to be terribly addictive.

    In addition, the author has created a playlist available on several platforms to accompany readers on their exotic road trip with the heroines.

    A breathtaking adventure!
