• The metropolis of Amiens has just unveiled its “energy efficiency plan”.

  • These include measures to save energy.

  • Part of this plan also shows the ambition of the metropolis to boost its energy production capacities, particularly solar.

The current surge in energy prices imposes on everyone, individuals and communities, sobriety which often takes the same form: consume less to limit the rise in bills.

And Amiens, the Picardy capital, is no exception to the rule.

At least in part.

Because instead of limiting itself to the necessary savings, the metropolis has decided to speed up energy production.

While many municipalities, such as Lille for example, have presented “energy sobriety” plans, Amiens has unveiled an “energy efficiency” plan.

A difference that is not only semantic.

So of course, Amiens Métropole will also lower the temperature in its public buildings, cut the heating in the corridors of the town hall, reduce the thickness of the ice in its ice rink, no longer connect the air conditioning to less than 26° and restrict the night lighting.

This will not prevent the energy bill from reaching 13 million euros in 2022. And since the outlook for the coming years is clearly not down for gas and electricity prices, the metropolis is anticipating .

Will the solar bet be a winner?

The idea is not to set up cash in order to cope with future increases, but rather to invest in energy production devices.

This starts with solar energy, with a budget of 5 million euros over four years devoted to experiments around self-consumption and to supporting projects in this direction.

The metropolis is also in the process of building a 13-hectare solar farm which will supply the equivalent of 2,330 homes, excluding heating.

Still with solar energy, a call for expression of interest (AMI) was launched to exploit the roofs of municipal buildings to install photovoltaic panels.

In another energy field, that of gas, another AMI concerns “agricultural methanisation” in the territory of the metropolis of Amiens.

This will involve developing this source of energy production by installing four methanisation units.

The energy efficiency plan also plans to continue the “development and greening” of the heating network which, to date, extends over 50 km from north to south of the city.
