The “Wiki Arabia” conference concluded the activities of its sixth edition, which was held at the Mohammed bin Rashid Library, with the launch of the “Million Wikipedia” initiative from Dubai, to enhance the digital content available in the Arabic language and enrich the open resources available to the Arab public in the region and the world, in a joint community project organized by a group of users. Emirates Wikimedia, in cooperation with the Emirates Literature Foundation, and with the support of the “Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives”, with the aim of adding one million contributions to Arabic content within the various Wikimedia projects, led by the Wikipedia encyclopedia, within three years.

The initiative was launched during the annual conference held in Dubai and for the first time in the GCC region, in the presence of the leaders of the Emirates Wikimedia user group, the Emirates Literature Foundation, and an elite of the Arab Wikimedia community.

It comes with the aim of bridging the gap in Arabic content within the Wikimedia projects, including Wikipedia, especially since the encyclopedia in its Arabic version has relied, since its establishment in 2003, on contributions from volunteer editors.

The “Million Wikipedia” initiative is based on a set of main themes, foremost of which is the focus on enriching the content and quality of “Wikipedia” articles in the Arabic language, and other wiki projects in the Arabic language, such as: Wikiquote, Wiki Dictionary, Wikisource, Wikinews, and Wikitravel.

These contributions include editing articles, uploading images, adding authoritative references, digitizing texts, adding quotes from important figures, and much more.

The initiative includes the establishment of a fund managed by the Emirates Wikimedia user group to finance individuals and groups of Arab users and NGOs that are concerned with developing and enriching Arabic content. Contribution, while the organizing committees dedicated to each project study the offers and review the contributions, and divide them annually among the different projects, according to a three-year timetable.

Therefore, we at the Emirates Literature Foundation and the Emirates Wikimedia Users Group were keen to play an active role in motivating the Arab communities of users of wiki projects to enrich Arabic content, by focusing on quality in research, development and translation, achieving a decent presence for our mother tongue, and raising the percentage of digital content

The “Wiki Arabia” conference was launched under the auspices of the “Wikimedia Foundation” and the “Emirates Literature Foundation” at the Mohammed bin Rashid Library on October 28, with the attendance of more than 100 participants from 20 nationalities, and 45 speakers from 16 parties, and lasted for three days, with 50 A workshop that covered various aspects of work within the Wikimedia community, starting with explaining the idea of ​​regional Wikimedia centers to the public, and ending with an analysis of the main current challenges of knowledge sharing and potential solutions.
