An epidemic of avian flu, this is what the town of Vallon-en-Sully (Allier) fears, after the discovery of the corpses of four swans between Tuesday and Friday of last week.

The remains were found along the Cher.

Measures were quickly taken by the local health authorities in order to stem the spread of the epizootic, reports France 3 Auvergne Rhône-Alpes.

Examination of the bodies of the four swans revealed that they had died after contracting the H5N1 avian influenza virus.

The Allier prefecture immediately published an order establishing a temporary control zone within a radius of twenty kilometers around the place where the birds were found.

For a period of at least 21 days after the discovery of a sick bird, any gathering involving poultry was prohibited.

Any contact between wild and domestic birds is also prohibited.

Owners of birds were also invited to report to the authorities as part of a census.
