Kate Middleton sent a very important message on social networks.

On the occasion of Addiction Awareness Week in the UK, the Princess of Wales has recorded a video in which she speaks directly to people who suffer from it.

“Know that addiction is not a choice.

No one chooses to become addicted.

I want you to know that this is also a serious health issue.

Please don't let shame keep you from getting the help you so desperately need.

The charities running the Taking Action on Addiction campaign, along with others, are working across the country to change people's lives and help them recover and move on.

They are there for you.

So please ask for help.

I know it was not a choice.

You can get away with it,” she said in a video.

Mental Health

Kate Middleton also wanted to highlight the efforts of the Forward Trust to help drug addicts.

“Addiction is a serious mental health problem that can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, race or nationality.

As patron of The Forward Trust, I have met many people who have suffered from the effects of addiction.

Attitudes towards addiction are changing,” she added, while acknowledging that more needs to be done.

“But we're not where we need to be yet.

The shame of addiction still keeps people and families from seeking help, and people are still tragically losing their lives.

As a society, we must recognize that the only way to help those who are suffering is to try to understand what led them to addiction, to show empathy and compassion for their struggle.
