Many leaders hail Lula's victory in Brazil

Lula is the phoenix of Brazilian politics.

It must be said that for twenty years, he has known everything, from the peaks to the abyss.

He had indeed reached record popularity (87%) at the end of his first two terms as head of Brazil (2003-2010), but had then experienced disgrace, going through prison for 580 days, after convictions for corruption finally quashed for defect of form.

This Sunday, the leader of the left made a historic comeback, winning the presidential election by a short margin (50.9%).

From Macron to Biden to Putin, many world leaders were quick to hail this victory.

The only false note of this election night, outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro has still not publicly acknowledged his defeat.

Pedestrian bridge collapse kills at least 130 in India

Diwali has turned into a nightmare in India, in the state of Gujarat.

At least 130 people died when a colonial-era pedestrian suspension bridge that spanned a river collapsed on Sunday night.

Authorities estimated that 500 people, including women and children, were celebrating the festival of lights on and around the bridge when the cables supporting it gave way shortly after dark.

The bridge over the Machchhu River was reopened to the public on Wednesday after seven months of work without a safety certificate being issued by authorities, according to NDTV.
