Iranian justice will continue to try, during public trials in Tehran, people arrested during the demonstrations sparked in mid-September by the death of Mahsa Amini, a young Iranian Kurd aged 22, the authorities announced Monday, October 31.

The public trials scheduled for the week target people "who have committed acts of sabotage during recent events, including assaulting or martyring members of the security forces, (and) setting fire to public property", the report said. Tasnim news agency, quoting Tehran's attorney general.

The trial of five people linked to the demonstrations and accused of crimes punishable by the death penalty had already opened on Saturday in the capital.

Among them, Mohammad Ghobadlou, prosecuted for "corruption on land", a charge punishable by death, for having "attacked police officers with a car, which resulted in the death of an officer and injuries to five others" , according to Mizan Online.

Justice has also charged Saïd Shirazi with the same count, for "having incited the people to commit crimes against security", continues the same source. 

Towards new sanctions?

Faced with this repression, the European Union is examining new sanctions against Iran, the German Chancellor indicated on Monday, October 31.

"I am shocked that people who demonstrated peacefully in Iran have lost their lives, we condemn the disproportionate violence of the security forces and support the population", affirmed on Twitter, Olaf Scholz.

"Our European Union sanctions are significant, we are considering additional measures," he added, without elaborating.

The day before, its foreign minister, Annalena Baerbock, had indicated that the possibility of designating the Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization was being studied.

"As I made clear last week, we will be launching a new sanctions package, we are also looking at how we can list the Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization," she told German public broadcaster ARD. .

Iran denounced, Monday, in advance as "illegal" such a project.

The EU had already adopted on October 17 sanctions against the morality police and eleven Iranian leaders involved in the repression of the demonstrations triggered by the death of Mahsa Amini.

The Guardians are already placed by Washington on its blacklist of "terrorist" entities.
