Football superstar Tom Brady and Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen are getting divorced after more than 13 years of marriage.

"We made this decision amicably and in gratitude for the time we shared," Brady wrote on Instagram of the "naturally painful and difficult" step, "as it is for so many people who go through the same thing every day around the world."

The move comes after weeks of speculation about the impending end of their marriage following the resignation of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback.

As US media reports, the celebrity couple has agreed on a comparison.

The papers are said to have been filed in Florida on Friday morning.

In mid-March, Brady revised his decision to resign after just 40 days.

The seven-time Super Bowl winner has a son (12) and a daughter (9) with Bummel, who married in February 2009 in California.

Brady also has a son (15) with his ex-partner Bridget Moynahan.

“We are blessed with beautiful and wonderful children who will continue to be the center of our world in every way.

We will continue to work together as parents to ensure they receive the love and attention they deserve," Brady said, asking for respect for the family's privacy.

In terms of sport, things are also going badly for the 45-year-old.

With his NFL team, Brady conceded his fifth defeat in the past six games on Thursday (local time) by beating the Baltimore Ravens 22:27, the play-offs are threatening to get out of reach early on.
