An emblematic drink of France, it would seem that wine is no longer the favorite drink of the French.

In recent years, there has been a drop in the consumption of so-called “still” wines, i.e. red, white and rosé wines.

Thus, according to the latest report from France AgriMer relayed by RTL, wine sales in mass distribution fell by 5% in volume in 2021, compared to 2020. It is red wine that fell the most, with a drop sales of 6.2% and a fall in its value of 1.6% in 2021 compared to the average for the period 2016-2020.

Champagne, the new favorite of the French?

White wine and rosé wine are holding up: sales of the first have increased by 3% in volume and those of the second have remained stable, notes RTL.

The two alcoholic beverages increased in value, up to 6% (for white wine) and 4% (for rosé).

The overall trend is downward in consumption, with a hard hit recorded during Covid-19 and a trend that seems to start rising again in 2021. However, the figures remain lower than the pre-pandemic period.

This is news that delights players in the sector, France being the 3rd largest wine producer in the world.

Today, the French seem more and more attracted by sparkling wines.

Thus, since 2020, champagne sales have increased by 13% in volume and 14% in value.

These more festive drinks also suffered the consequences of the health crisis but quickly recovered.
