In the past ten years, the Beijing Meteorological Department has completed an average of more than 30 to 50 meteorological support services for major events each year, laying the foundation for the successful holding of major events in the capital.

  Decade weather service hits multiple "firsts"

  Thunderstorms and strong winds, short-term heavy precipitation, hail... Since the flood season began on June 1 this year, severe convective weather has occurred frequently in Beijing.

In order to do a good job in flood season weather forecast, the Beijing Meteorological Bureau has set up five observation and forecast interaction groups to actively carry out research and development and visualization applications of new observation data fusion products.

  During the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Beijing Meteorological Bureau developed a 10-meter resolution ground wind analysis product for the Tiananmen area; for the needs of temporary large-scale structures, buildings and fireworks, the Beijing Meteorological Bureau developed a wind direction from 50 meters to 200 meters high. Wind speed forecast; research and develop a special visualization module for meteorological support for major events to realize centralized visualization and comparative analysis of live and model forecast products of various key weather elements in the Tiananmen area.

  Challenge the "forecast ceiling" to improve accuracy

  During the celebration of the centenary of the founding of the Communist Party, the special class of meteorological forecast service challenged the "forecast ceiling" and faced the worldwide problem of timing, fixed-point and quantitative forecasting.

After the successful completion of the guarantee activities, the Municipal Meteorological Bureau struck while the iron was hot, and implemented the "Magic Wand Action" focusing on the improvement of accurate forecasting and early warning capabilities: carried out the dynamic downscaling application of the numerical forecasting model of the China Meteorological Administration in Beijing; To the streets (townships, towns); intelligent grid forecast 2 to 3 days product time resolution increased from 3 hours to 1 hour.

  If observations are the cornerstone of forecasting services, then climate prediction is the "first officer."

During the Beijing Winter Olympics, the Beijing Meteorological Bureau applied the theory of mountain meteorology to scientifically simulate the climate characteristics of Mount Haituo, and innovatively proposed the concept of "freezing period" suitable for starting snowmaking and continuous ice and snow sports, in order to successfully bid for the Winter Olympics. The Beijing Meteorological Bureau has carried out climate forecasting in the competition area and analysis of meteorological conditions during the snowmaking window for four consecutive years.

  The first meteorological "special class" mechanism was established

In 2019, during the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the meteorological "special class" mechanism was established for the first time. Under the organization of the China Meteorological Administration, 24 outstanding chief experts were selected from the national business scientific research units and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei meteorological department. Forecast team, participate in various conferences and service guarantees.

Since then, the mechanism has played a role in a number of major events.

  In 2021, in the meteorological support service for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, the experienced forecasters and the "newcomers" who participated in the protection of major events for the first time formed a team to bring the old to the new and inherit the ingenuity.

  In order to face the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and Winter Paralympics, the China Meteorological Administration has organized a mountain weather forecast team with Beijing and Hebei provincial meteorological departments as the main body, and national and northern provincial meteorological departments mainly participate.

The team's 52 technical backbones have been stationed in the Winter Olympics for 5 consecutive winters for training camps to conduct field research on complex mountain weather forecasting problems, and carry out a special "competition" campaign for the actual combat of Winter Olympics venue forecasting to enhance the refined forecasting capabilities of the venue's meteorological elements.

A number of units jointly set up a team of climate experts and service teams for the Winter Olympics to conduct in-depth research on small-scale climate assessment and prediction technologies.

Under the special support of the national "Science and Technology Winter Olympics", 43 experts from the meteorological and civil aviation departments and a number of scientific research institutes formed a scientific and technological research team to conduct in-depth research on complex mountain meteorological mechanisms.

  In the past ten years, relying on the meteorological support services for various major events, the Beijing Meteorological Department has stimulated the innovative vitality of talents in many aspects, cultivated batches of professional talents, and laid a solid foundation for the rapid development of meteorological undertakings in the capital.
