While the disposal of a large amount of pumice washed ashore in Okinawa Prefecture has become a problem, pumice will be used for reclamation work in Nakagusuku Bay in the central part of the main island of Okinawa, and work began on the 14th.

Since autumn last year, a large amount of pumice generated by the eruption of the submarine volcanoes of the Ogasawara Islands has washed ashore in Okinawa Prefecture. increase.

Under these circumstances, the Okinawa General Secretariat of the country decided to use pumice stones for the reclamation work of Nakagusuku Bay in the central part of the main island of Okinawa, and the work began on the 14th.

Since pumice alone does not provide sufficient strength for the reclaimed ground, the pumice was mixed with earth and sand at the site and then scattered on the ground using an excavator.

According to the Okinawa General Secretariat, about 20,000 cubic meters of pumice will be used for this landfill.

Mr. Masayuki Tanemura, port and airport instructor of the Okinawa General Bureau, said, "We are finally able to landfill the collected pumice stones. We want to proceed with the work safely and steadily."

According to the Okinawa General Secretariat, the reclamation work is expected to be completed by the end of this fiscal year.
