Emmys 2022: Desperation, déjà vu and drama (invented)
That restaurant kitchens are little hells is something we have already seen many times.
We have seen meritocratic and highly entertaining versions of the very particular microcosm of chefs such as the North American
Top Chef
, white and innocuous distillations such as our
Masterchef
or the supposedly realistic approaches of Alberto Chicote or Gordon Ramsay to what is a crisis in the kitchen.
Fiction has also taken advantage of such an attractive theme, although almost always taking it to a pleasant tone.
There are both
Delicious Marta
and the North American remake of her, that
Without reservations
in which Catherine Zeta-Jones and Aaron Eckhart showed us that in Hollywood living between
fat, steam and smoke
It is perfectly compatible with always having perfect hair.
It's funny that, thanks to the stupendous
The Bear
(and a white Merz b. Schwanen T-shirt), Jeremy Allen White, the Lip Gallagher of
Shameless
, is also considered a bit of a sex
symbol
.
In the Christopher Storer series, available in Spain on Disney+, Allen White is Carmen
Carmy
Berzatto, a prestigious American chef who, after the death of his brother,
has to take over the humble restaurant that he ran
.
He's a noisy, rabble-rousing joint from Chicago, with a kitchen populated with quirky characters.
This, that the kitchens are populated by peculiar characters, is something that the spectators already know.
It was taught to us by both Chicote and Anthony Bourdain.
The lamented Bourdain is a clear reference in
The Bear
.
The nervous, self-conscious and full of demons played by Jeremy Allen White has a lot of
that stereotype that Bourdain brought to light more than creating
: the crazy schedules, the recurring vices, the tattoos, the great hair.
The Bear
, in turn, does not bother to introduce us to an ecosystem, that of the back room of a restaurant, with which we are already familiar: the hanged, the shouts, the knives, the wild humor, the galleys, the honor and
getting into the cold room to cry a little
.
And yet this series does not smell stale or expired.
The Bear
is both infuriating and endearing, wild and comfortable, utterly recognizable and brand new.
When we see Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) arrive at Carmy's restaurant again,
we already know what awaits her
.
And what awaits us.
She is the mirror of him, she is Carmy before the world ate Carmy.
The Bear
, whose second season is already confirmed, is also the question of whether the world will eat Sydney.
Or Richard (Ebon Moss-Bachrach, the Desi from
Girls
), or Tina (Liza Colon-Zayas) or Gary (Corey Hendrix).
Much of his life takes place in the kitchen madness of The Original Beef of Chicagoland.
They are, as they say (it's restaurant slang), a family and, like all families, they are full of love and problems.
Watching this series
the last thing you want to do is dedicate yourself to cooking
.
This last sentence is a lie.
