Like every year, October is the month of breast cancer prevention.

In this regard, the “My Pebs” study, a contraction in English of “My personalized breast cancer screening”, has made it possible to detect hitherto unknown risk factors.

A project that detected cancer in a 48-year-old woman.

Breast cancer awareness continues in this pink month of October.

And contrary to an idea sometimes conveyed, the risk of contracting this disease is not reserved for women with a family history.

Thanks to the "My Pebs" study, several women have discovered that they have risk factors.

In the family of Sandrine, 53 years old, no breast cancer to report and yet her profile and her genetic tests show a high probability of developing a tumour.

"When you are not breastfeeding enough, it is a risk factor. You can see small breasts visually with a large mammary gland which is a risk factor. Afterwards, there was a strand of DNA that was identified as being at risk. Today, the fact of being under surveillance every year, indeed, that reassures me", develops the fifty-year-old.

A cancer detected thanks to this system

Like her, in France, nearly 9,000 women aged 40 to 70 take part in the “My Pebs” study.

Still unknown for the time being, the results look promising.

"We have been able to identify women who are in the 'slightly high risk' category, are in the 40-50 age group and should not have had mammograms at all. The idea is to reduce the stage 2 breast cancers and the more we know that the smaller the tumor, the better the prognosis", indicates Corinne Balleyguier, head of the imaging department at the Gustave Roussy Institute and coordinator of the study.

Thanks to this project, cancer was detected in a 48-year-old woman last week.

Under the current system, she would have had to wait two years before having her first mammogram.

The "My Pebs" study is still open and 36 departments in France are participating in the operation.
