“The witness in the grapes of Hebron, and the springs of Salsabil water, are the legacy of generation after generation, and the struggle of a long history.” The description of grape clusters planted in the land of the Hebron Governorate in the southern West Bank is no longer valid, as poets sang about it in the past. This is the agricultural heritage for which the city was famous The Ibrahimi Mosque, over time, has been subjected to escalating settlement deformation, especially during the peak production of this seasonal crop, which extends from mid-August until the end of September each year.

Settlement distortion of the agricultural grape season affects the vast majority of the lands of the grape crop in the Hebron areas, which have an area of 47 thousand dunums, as it is adjacent to the settlements perched on the lands of Palestinian towns and villages, which devour thousands of agricultural dunums, under the pretext that they are included in the structural scheme of the limits of their influence.

On the slopes of the mountains of the towns of Halhul, Sa`ir, and Al-Shuyoukh, and within the suburbs of Beit Ummar, Nuba, and Al-Aroub refugee camp in the Hebron Governorate, grape trees with green dahlias, their multiple colors and their different varieties, spread within vast areas. From agricultural lands, the harvest season begins throughout the summer, and even after the beginning of the fall, while the number of grape varieties inside the lands of Hebron is 17 varieties and flavors.

Osama Jarrar, Director General of Agriculture in Hebron, said, “The city of Hebron used to these scenes annually, throughout the harvest season. The cultivation of grape trees is a symbol of confrontation within the Palestinian city, where this crop ranks second as the most important agricultural product after olives, while it is an important tributary to the national economy. The local, bypassing all the obstacles of the occupation and its arbitrary practices, to be characterized by superior taste and high quality.

These natural aesthetic scenes face what distorts them, and turns the taste of the witness into an abhorrent bitterness, which the Palestinians swallow again and again, as a result of the settlements in Hebron nibbling thousands of acres of agricultural land, to prevent the occupation from entering their confiscated lands, taking care of their crops, and irrigating them, in addition to controlling groundwater sources. And attacking farmers’ crops by burning and bulldozing, causing them heavy losses, and depriving them of their seasonal source of income, according to Jarrar.

The Director-General of Hebron Agriculture, during his speech to "Emirates Today", indicated that the grapes of the Ibrahimi Mosque are ranked first in grape production among Palestinian cities and governorates, as well as competing with agricultural products, and exporting large quantities of their annual crop to Arab and Gulf countries.

Over the successive years, the Hebron grape has become an agricultural heritage and history passed down through generations, and one of the components of the cultural and civilizational heritage of the people of Hebron in particular, and the people of Palestine in general. They inherit its cultivation over successive generations, to distinguish them from other Palestinian cities and towns.

Molasses, blueberries and raisins

The head of the Grape and Fruits Council in Hebron Governorate, Fathi Abu Ayash, said that the Ibrahimi Mosque produces about 40,000 tons of grapes annually, in addition to producing about 4,000 tons of grape leaves, which are sold in local markets, for use in cooking.

He added that the number of grape varieties planted in Hebron lands is 17, including Al-Jandali, Al-Bayrouti, Al-Halwani, Al-Baladi, Al-Shami, Al-Dabouqi, Al-Hamdani, Al-Ziny, Al-Marawi, Al-Fahisi, Al-Rumi Al-Ahmar, Al-Shikhi and Al-Baytouni.

Abu Ayyash shows that the fruits of grapes of various types and flavors are used in the manufacture of several food products, namely “molasses”, “blueberry” grape jam, “raisins” and “malban”, noting that this doubles the importance and rank of this crop in the national agricultural production. Grapes make a significant contribution to the total national income.
