The Sharjah Museums Authority celebrates the Emirates Civil Aviation Day and the 90th anniversary of the landing of the first plane on the land of Sharjah Air Station, which was the first airport in the region. : The first landing 90 years ago” and a number of events to highlight the prosperity and development achieved by the UAE in the aviation sector.

The exhibition narrates the history of the establishment of Sharjah Air Station in 1932, highlighting the stages of construction, the route of flights that took off from it and the first moment of landing.

It also shows a film about the first landing of the "HANO" plane at Sharjah Station on its return trip to Britain from Karachi, India, with four passengers and crew on board, noting the excitement caused by the landing, which was followed by the visit of Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah and his brothers and a crowd of Sharjah residents to the site.

The exhibition also reveals a set of historical photographs for the first time taken by Wing Commander Harold Allsop, who served as Air Wing Commander in the RAF between 1932 and 1956.

Al Mahatta Museum opens its doors today (5 October) free of charge to the public to visit the exhibition and learn about the program of educational events and activities organized by the Sharjah Museums Authority for a whole month.

The authority’s celebration of the landing of the plane, which was for the purpose of resting and refueling, at the first civilian air airport known to the British in the region, which was built between 1932 and 1933, through which Imperial Airlines connects Britain with India and Australia, with the aim of highlighting the importance of the Mahatta Museum as the first airport to open in the country.

Director General of the Sharjah Museums Authority, Manal Ataya, who inaugurated the exhibition, said, "The celebration comes in appreciation of the history of the first airport in the country, and contributes to highlighting Sharjah's position and pivotal role in opening up to the cultures and civilizations of others through the first airport in the region."

She added, "The interest of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, in the station was demonstrated by His Highness' writing a book entitled (Sharjah Air Station between East and West), in which he documented the dates and preliminary agreements that led to the establishment of the first runway for landing in The Emirate of Sharjah will be a bridge between the East and the West.
