UNEP = United Nations Environment Program Director-General Andersen, who visited Japan, met with Minister of the Environment Nishimura and confirmed the importance of creating an international framework in which more countries participate in reducing marine plastic litter.

Ingar Andersen, Executive Director of UNEP, was greeted by Minister of the Environment Nishimura at the beginning of the meeting, saying, "Japan will do its utmost to cooperate with the activities." He said.



At the meeting, we confirmed the importance of more countries participating in the international treaty negotiating committee, which will begin in Uruguay next month, to promote the creation of a framework for reducing marine plastic litter, which causes marine pollution. .



It is estimated that approximately 8 million tons of plastic waste flows into the ocean annually worldwide, raising concerns about its impact on ecosystems.



The negotiating committee aims to draft a legally binding international convention on plastic pollution by 2024.

Regarding the reduction of marine plastic litter, Minister Nishimura said, "Plastic pollution is a growing global issue. It is most important to create an effective framework in which as many countries as possible that consume large amounts of plastic participate. I want to continue."
