• New Year's Concert 2022 Barenboim calls for unity in the return of the public

  • Daniel Barenboim "I have no envy of Mrs. Merkel, although she is doing things wonderfully well"

The musician

Daniel Barenboim

revealed on Tuesday that he was diagnosed with a "serious" neurological condition, so he will have to

relegate some of his

artistic commitments to take care of his health.

"My health has deteriorated in recent months and I have been diagnosed with a serious neurological condition. I must focus on my physical well-being as much as possible," the

79-year-old pianist and conductor

wrote on his official Twitter account.

The Argentine musician

, nationalized Spanish, Israeli and Palestinian,

considered it a "combination of pride and sadness" to announce that he will have to take "a step back" in some of his stage activities for the coming months.

"Music was and

continues to be an essential and permanent part of my life.

I have lived in and through music all my life and will continue to do so for as long as my health allows. As I look back and forward, I am not only satisfied, but profoundly realised", concluded Barenboim.

Already this year, the musician suspended other commitments for health reasons.

At the end of last August, in a statement released by the Berlin National Opera, of which he has been musical director since 1992 and whose contract was recently extended until 2027, it was reported that Barenboim would not be able to lead the new

Ring of the Nibelung

due to health reasons, so it would finally be directed by the German

Christian Thielemann.

"I am tremendously sad for not being able to conduct the new 'Ring,'" the maestro said then, who argued that his health was a "priority" issue and that he should concentrate on his complete recovery before putting himself back in front of an orchestra.

Born in 1942 in

Buenos Aires,

Barenboim has received awards for his prolific career such as the

Prince of Asturias Award for Concord

(2002), the

Wolf Foundation Prize for

the Arts in Jerusalem (2004), the

Commander of the Order of the French Legion of Honor

(2007) and various

Grammy Awards

in various categories.
