• Abortion Law Doctors against the lists of objectors to abortion: "It should be known who is willing, not the other way around"

The Minister of Health of the Generalitat of

Catalonia

, Josep Maria Argimon, accompanied by the Minister of Equality and Feminism, Tània Verge, announced on Wednesday at the First Work Day on Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy (IVE) in Catalonia, held at the Hospital Vall d'Hebron in Barcelona, that a

new protocol

has been drawn up that incorporates "

the extension of the IVE with a pharmacological method up to 14 weeks

".

The new protocol, as reported by the Ministry, includes the

recommendations based on scientific evidence and accumulated clinical experience

.

In accordance with all this, it states that the possibility of interrupting the pregnancy pharmacologically is extended until week 14.

"With this extension, from week 9 to 14,

a safer, less invasive process is guaranteed

that mimics the natural abortion process. It avoids the surgical procedure, general anesthesia and reduces the risk of complications."

This protocol, according to Health, has been prepared together with the Department of Equality and Feminism;

the

Catalan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology

;

the Catalan Association of Midwives and the Catalan Association of Contraception, with the aim of updating and improving the recommendations for the care of women throughout the process of voluntary interruption of pregnancy.

The protocol will be progressively deployed throughout the Catalan territory.

At this time,

it has already begun to be deployed in Lleida, Anoia and Terrassa

.

In addition, training with professionals is also planned.

Background

In January 2021, the Ministry of Health showed interest in

prioritizing that interruptions at the beginning of pregnancy be done with drugs

and within the public health network until the ninth week, which is until when pharmacological abortion is recommended.

And last August, the Council of Ministers sent to the Cortes, requesting its urgent processing, the project to

modify the Organic Law on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy

.

The new norm will shield access to the voluntary interruption of pregnancy in public centers and will regulate access to conscientious objection.

Women between the ages of 16 and 18 will not need the consent of their legal guardians to access the interruption, as was the case before the PP modified, in 2015, the rule in force since 2010, nor will women with disabilities.

The reform will also eliminate, if its initial wording is approved, the three-day reflection period and the mandatory information for women.

The text of the bill includes the obligation to inform of the methods or techniques for voluntary abortion, but

does not clarify whether it will be primary care or what level should inform interested women

.
