▲ On a bloody Sunday

morning, on Sunday morning, April 15, 2007, Shintanjin in Daejeon.

A man walked into his regular coffee shop to get his morning coffee.

But I see a woman crouching in front of the coffee shop over there.

It was Mr. Choi (pseudonym), a coffee shop employee.

Choi was covered in blood all over, and even had a hernia in his stomach.

she got stabbed

A report was immediately filed with the police, and Choi was taken to the hospital.

Team leader Kim Yeon-soo of the Daedeok Police Station's violent team and detectives were also dispatched.

Detective Kim arrived at the scene and slowly walked towards the coffee shop.

There's blood dripping down the street, at the entrance to the building, and down the stairs to the basement.

He went down to the basement coffee shop step by step and opened the door, and he smelled fishy blood.

I'll show you the coffee shop back then.

You can see bloodstains everywhere in the cafeteria.

There are drops of blood all over the floor, and bloody handprints on the sofa.

There are towels to wipe blood in the kitchen, and there's a lot of blood.

And another woman was found in the bathroom, which was all covered in blood.

It was Mr. Yoon (pseudonym), a coffee shop employee.

Yoon, who was stabbed here and there, unfortunately died on the spot.

Yun was wearing rubber gloves on his hands.

I got attacked by a gang while cleaning before opening.

Victim Yoon's stockings were torn at the back, so a sexual offense was also suspected.

Looking at the wound, I got a focused attack on her neck.

The wound on the inside of her neck is 15 cm long, and I cut it twice.

It means that the murderer's intentions are certain.

Immediately, the forensic team went on-site forensics.

A hair, a cigarette butt, and blood and fingerprints left in the coffee shop were all collected.

A blood-stained knife emerged from the scene.

It was a crime tool.

But why did the criminal leave the knife at the scene?

Either he ran away in a hurry, or the culprit had a very daring personality.

Detective Kim thought that the culprit might be nearby, so he urgently requested assistance from headquarters.

Even with the support of the police, about 150 people searched a 1.5km radius.

I brought everything that could be evidence.

I thoroughly searched through all the rubbish and even stones on the roadside.

I have collected over 100 pieces of evidence.

The police handed over this evidence to the National Forensic Service to check if the criminal's DNA was present.

And if DNA comes out, there must be a suspect to check, so the police quickly started to find the suspect.

To do that, he has someone he must meet.

Choi is the victim and witness.

▲ 100 Evidences, Hundreds of Suspects

Detective Kim met Choi after surgery.

Choi went to work on the day of the incident and met Yoon, then went out for a while and came in, but he wasn't there, so he went to the bathroom to clean, and ran into a man hiding behind a partition.

At that moment, the man suddenly jumped out and stabbed him in the stomach with a knife, and Mr. Choi fell down and took the knife in his hand.

He was trying to take the knife.

When Mr. Choi strongly resisted, the criminal panicked and fled the scene.

The blood-stained knife found at the scene was stolen by Mr. Choi from the criminal.

Choi collapsed in front of the building while chasing after the criminal.

Detective Kim asked Choi what the criminal was wearing.

"He's of average height, and his face… I can't remember."

I was so shocked that Choi's memory disappeared.

He even tried hypnotic investigations, but to no avail.

In the end, we didn't get any clues about the suspect.

Detective Kim decided to look into the case again from the beginning.

What is the motive for the crime?

The autopsy revealed no evidence of sexual assault on the deceased.

So is it the money?

The only thing missing from the coffee shop was 50,000 won in cash.

Enlarging an image

No rape, no money, or a grudge relationship?

Detective Kim investigated the relationship between grudges and politics.

I looked at all the people around the victim, the customers at the coffee shop, and even the people I talked to recently.

That number is over 300.

Are there any suspects among them?

Enlarging an image

“If you listen to the stories of people around you (in a murder case), more than 90% of the suspects are compressed to some extent and arrested within a week. Nothing came out."

- At that time, Kim Yeon-soo, the head of the powerful team at the Daedeok Police Station

, couldn't find anything.

None of the people around me could be called a suspect.

Just as the investigation was about to fall into the labyrinth, a ray of light came on.

An eyewitness appeared.

On the morning of the incident, a man passing by said he almost ran into a man running from the cafeteria.

Then he turned his head to see that Mr. Choi was bleeding in front of the coffee shop.

The time of sight coincided with the time of the criminal's escape.

The police created a montage based on eyewitness statements.

That's it.

Enlarging an image

A man in his late 30's.

He is about 175 cm tall.

Wearing black framed glasses, a black jumper, and dark suit pants…

.

After the montage came out, the police distributed 5,000 wanted flyers and started an investigation.

I've drawn up a list of nearby inns, recent prisoners, and even people I've called around the same time period.

That's over 500 people.

While the detectives interrogated, National Forensic Service researcher Cho Nam-soo found the criminal's DNA in about 100 pieces of evidence collected on the day of the incident.

First, there were numerous bloodstains in the cafeteria.

Were there any bloodstains from the criminal?

Enlarging an image

"In the coffee shop, the second victim (Mr. Choi) continued to bleed in a living form, so the evidence came out the most and matched the second victim the most. Inside the bathroom where the deceased (Mr. Yoon) was found The bloodstains were all of the victims to the extent that they were of no great significance. The requested evidence only revealed the victim's DNA, and no DNA to identify the suspect."

-At that time, researcher Nam-soo Cho of the National Forensic Service in Daejeon

, all the bloodstains found were the blood of the victim.

It was impossible to identify a suspect by bloodstain.

The second piece of evidence was DNA from cigarette butts and hair.

But there are so many that I don't know who it is.

All the DNA of the customers who came and went to the coffee shop came out.

Also, the suspect cannot be identified.

The third piece of evidence is a blood-stained knife.

conclusive evidence of murder.

But all the blood on the knife belonged to the victim.

There was so much blood that the knife didn't even detect fingerprints.

The fourth piece of evidence is a fingerprint on the door of the cafeteria.

It was a very clear fingerprint just after it was taken.

The police immediately identified the owner of this fingerprint.

The main character of the fingerprint was a former convict of 7 criminals.

Police suspected him as a suspect, but this man had an alibi on the day of the incident.

He was just a regular at the coffee shop, but he said he had nothing to do with the murder.

In the end, none of the evidence collected at the coffee shop could be found.

The police and the National Forensic Service are heartbroken.

▲ The DNA of the culprit was finally found

So the investigation fell into a labyrinth.

However, the decisive 'smoking gun' appeared.

That's it.

Enlarging an image

It's a bloody tissue that the police collected from a back alley 500 meters from the coffee shop.

Some man's DNA was found in this blood.

Is this the criminal's DNA?

I can't decide yet.

But I found something else.

It's a black jumper found by the river 1.5km from the coffee shop.

Enlarging an image

While the police were interrogating, a certain angler said he picked it up on the road and brought it with him.

The jumper was so fine, I kept it in case I could wear it later.

Researcher Cho of the National Forensic Service conducted a 'luminol test' on this jumper.

did you see it in the movie?

When luminol is sprayed on a blood-stained area, it emits a blue fluorescent light.

This test can also detect invisible bloodstains.

Researcher Cho did a luminol test on the jumper and found clear bloodstains in three places: the front of the jumper, the right sleeve, and the lining.

So who is the owner of this bloodstain?

DNA analysis revealed male DNA from the front bloodstain.

But this DNA matched the DNA from earlier bloody tissue.

The owner of this dress threw away the toilet paper.

Then, the DNA of the deceased victim, Yoon, was found in the bloodstains on the tip of the right sleeve.

In the lining, both the DNA of Mr. Yoon and the man were detected.

There is solid evidence that the owner of this jumper is the culprit.

I finally found the criminal's DNA, which was not found in the evidence collected from the coffee shop.

Now the question is, how do we find the DNA party?

In the days when there was no criminal DNA database, finding the DNA owner is finding Kim Seobang in Seoul.

not too cumbersome

Enlarging an image

But one small thing was found in the jumper.

There was eye drops in the jumper pocket.

But these eye drops are cataract-like, post-ophthalmic surgery.

The police thought that the culprit was among those who were prescribed these eye drops, and the investigation continued.

On the 19th day of the incident, the list of prescribing eye drops came out.

But there are 1,000 people all over the country who have been prescribed these eye drops.

We need to collect and analyze the DNA of these 1,000 people one by one to find the culprit.

not cumbersome

They call to explain the situation, obtain oral consent and then visit in person, obtain written consent once again, collect oral cells and send them to the National Forensic Service, and it takes one to two weeks for the results of the National Forensic Service to come out.

I have to do this a thousand times.

If you don't agree, you'll need a warrant.

In addition, at the time, there were only 4 researchers at the National Forensic Service in Daejeon, and these 4 people were in charge of all cases occurring in about 30 government offices in Chungcheong Province.

Physically identifying the DNA of a thousand people is a very difficult task, with no way of knowing how many years it will take.

▲ Fighting against 0.001% probability

Just then, an idea popped into Researcher Cho's head.

He rummaged through his bookshelf and found a document.

This is a paper titled 'Last Name and Y Chromosome' written by Professor Brian Sykes of Oxford University, UK.

Enlarging an image

"It has been common since medieval times in England for children to follow their father's surname. Since it is also biologically necessary for a son to inherit his father's Y chromosome, this suggests that the Y chromosomes of men of the same surname may have similar characteristics. it means."

-'Last name and Y chromosome' thesis

Women have XX and men have XY chromosomes, and the Y chromosome has a property called 'paternal inheritance'.

From grandfather to father, from father to son, the Y chromosome is inherited that way.

And surnames are inherited from generation to generation.

What does this mean?

If the Y chromosomes are similar, it is highly likely that they have the same surname.

Paternal inheritance of the Y chromosome is theoretically possible, but it has never been used in investigations.

Still, Researcher Cho compared the male Y chromosome from jumpers and tissues with various surnames in the hope of grasping even a straw.

As a result, it was found that there is a high possibility that 'Mr. Oh' is of the same paternal line.

Enlarging an image

I can't trust this result 100%.

Because there are various variables in the surname.

In rare cases, you can follow your mother's last name, and there is a possibility that you can change your last name because you are adopted or out of wedlock.

Because of this situation, Researcher Joe was worried.

I was worried that I might confuse the investigation by bringing this up for nothing, or that the investigation might go in the wrong direction.

At that time, Researcher Cho said that he was so stressed that he even got gastroenteritis.

Still, Researcher Cho mustered up the courage to inform the investigation team of what he had found out.

There is a possibility that the culprit is Mr. Oh, so please bear with it.

The police were skeptical of Researcher Cho's words, but they decided to put their hopes on the line and started an investigation.

Enlarging an image

Of the 1,000 eye drops prescribers, there were 50 or so men in their 20s and 40s who had the surname Oh.

The number of suspects has dropped sharply.

The investigation has taken off.

The police have started collecting the genes of these 50 people.

The 25th Mr. Oh that the police met was a security guard at an electronics mall in Seoul.

He called and asked for help with DNA extraction, and Mr. Oh said he would be happy to do so.

He went to the company, signed a consent form, and took oral cells.

The police were discouraged by Oh's cooperating behavior in such a cool way, 'not this time again'.

Still, just in case, I checked the criminal history of this man, and the police couldn't help but be surprised.

Oh had been serving a 15-year sentence and had only been released for two years.

His crime was 'serial murder'.

Read this article.

“August 14, 1989. Do-kyung, South Chungcheong Province, arrested Oh Mo-gun on charges of murder and corpse abandonment. On the 12th, around 1 pm, Oh took the 7-year-old Mo, who was playing in front of his house, to the mountain behind the village and assaulted him. He was accused of strangling Yang when he said he was going home crying. They dug a puddle and buried it."

- 1989 article content

Mr. Oh, who murdered a kindergarten student in China and buried him in the dark.

He was 18 years old at the time.

So he's 15 years in prison, which is the maximum juvenile law he can give at the time.

However, a more shocking fact was revealed during the investigation.

Murder wasn't all that, he killed a whopping two more.

Oh was a serial killer who killed three people when he was a teenager.

What stands out is Mr. Oh's criminal tactics.

All three people killed were stabbed in the throat with knives.

It's like a coffee shop murder case.

The police had no choice but to suspect Mr.

Then, I got a decisive call from the National Forensic Service.

Oh's DNA matches the jumper DNA.

Enlarging an image

The culprit in the coffee shop employee murder case was the 25th Mr. Oh.

Detectives immediately arrived and arrested Oh.

The arrest was 80 days after the incident occurred.

▲ There is no perfect crime

A person who would have waited more than anyone for the news of this arrest, Researcher Cho of the National Forensic Service.

I was so happy to hear the news that my stomach ulcers went away.

It was the first case in the history of K-Forensic Investigation in which a criminal was caught by guessing his surname.

Oh admitted all the crimes.

There was no one-to-one relationship with the victims.

Then why the hell did he do such a terrible thing?

Oh said he committed the crime to pay for the transportation to Seoul after finishing his grave.

Because I didn't have enough money for a car with only 3,000 won, I brutally murdered someone.

Enlarging an image

As a result of the psychological evaluation, Oh was diagnosed with 'antisocial personality disorder'.

A personality disorder that harms others and engages in antisocial behavior without a sense of guilt.

He was diagnosed with the same thing when he committed murder as a teenager.

If Mr. Oh was not caught at this time, another crime may have occurred and another victim may have arisen.

Oh was sentenced to life in prison as a result of the trial.

Let me introduce you to the impressive sentences written in that judgment.

Enlarging an image

"In just two years after being released from prison, he committed another serious crime, there is no reason to take into account the motive of the crime, and the method of the crime is bold and brutal. In order to give the accused an opportunity for the rest of his life to deeply repent of the victims and to seriously consider 'where he came from and where he will go,' the sentence was ordered as a mantra..."

- In the sentence of Mr. Oh, where did he

come from and where will he go…

.

It is very rare for such an abstract expression to appear in a judgment.

There is one more unsolved mystery.

How did the bloodstains of the criminal who were not at the scene remain on the jumper?

That was discovered through on-site inspection of the culprit.

In the on-site inspection conducted on July 9, 2007, the criminal reenacted his crime at the scene of the incident.

At the time, I found out that the victim, Yoon, had bitten the hand of the criminal, Oh.

That's when Oh's blood got on the jumper.

The victim's last resistance was left as a dying message.

With that evidence, we were able to finally catch the culprit.

If the police couldn't find the jumper on the day of the incident, if the National Forensic Service didn't find these bloodstains, if they couldn't compress the suspect by guessing the surname, it would have taken a long time to catch the criminal.

Many people's tenacity and effort to solve the case eventually led them to find the needle in the sand.

Enlarging an image

“With the current analysis method, no matter who commits a crime, the era has come when it is possible to prove that person only by analyzing the microscopic amount of cells, so there is no way not to leave his own cells behind. want."

- Researcher Nam-soo Cho, National Forensic Service, Daejeon

"I think it is because of our nation's character that we do our jobs quietly under the given circumstances, rather than that we did well.

- Daedeok Police Station Team Leader Kim Yeon-soo

The evidence at the scene of the incident changes every 10 minutes because it is corrupted.

The National Forensic Service is constantly analyzing and researching so as not to miss a single clue.

And the police are also running with the determination not to make unsolved cases.

Since there are those who work hard in their respective positions, maybe the saying 'there is no perfect crime' comes out.

The arrest rate for murder cases in Korea is 97.2% as of 2020, the highest in the world.

There are people working day and night behind the safe today we enjoy.
