Mr. Ariyoshi was born in Okayama Prefecture, and became a professional shogi player at the age of 19 in 1955 after apprenticing to the 15th generation master Yasuharu Oyama, who was also from Okayama Prefecture.



With his aggressive style of shogi, known as ``Hinotama-ryu,'' he has appeared in a total of 9 title matches, winning ``Kisei'' and winning the 30th NHK Trophy Tournament.

He continued to play an active role as a professional shogi player until he retired in 2010 at the age of 74, the oldest active player at the time. His posture was loved by many fans.
