For four years, Hayden Panettiere no longer has custody of her daughter, Kaya.

The 33-year-old actress had to entrust parental rights to the child's father, Wladimir Klitschko, because she herself had to treat her addiction to opiates and alcohol.

The boxer went to live in Ukraine, his country of origin, with the girl, then three years old.

A heartbreak for the actress.

If she recognizes today that it was for the best, Hayden Panettiere suffered from the way things were done.

“There was no discussion.

If [Wladimir Klitschko] had come to me and said "I think given the situation you're in now and the worries you have, it would be better for her to be with me for a while", I would have said that it was the most sensible thing to do, that I would come and visit him.

Because it didn't happen that way, it was heartbreaking," she said on Jada Pinkett Smith's "Red Table Talk" on Facebook Watch.

A heartbreak

In addition, Hayden Panettiere thought that the situation would be temporary.

“I was going to work on myself, get better, and when I got better, things would change, she would come with me and I could spend time with her, but it didn't turn out that way.

These are the worst papers I've had to sign in my life, the most heartbreaking thing I've ever done.

The papers gave full custody [to Wladimir Klitschko],” the star explains.

Along with her addiction issues, the

actress also found herself in a toxic relationship.

Brian Hickerson, who then shared his life, was sentenced to forty-five days in prison for domestic violence in 2021. The man was arrested for the first time in 2019. The star ended up withdrawing his complaint and getting back into a relationship with him and the violence had started again.

Less than a year later, the police had intervened again.

He is not allowed to approach Hayden Panettiere for five years.

Leaving custody of Kaya to her father was "the hardest thing" for the actress, "but the best thing for my daughter was to make sure she was okay, and that I was taking care of myself so that to be the best mother possible”.

Since then, war has broken out in Ukraine, with Wladimir Klitschko enlisting to fight the Russian army.

Their daughter has left the country, but her address is kept secret for security.
