Bourg-lès-Valence (Drôme) has decided to boycott the World Cup in Qatar.

The town hall announced it in

on Tuesday: it will not install a giant screen to broadcast the matches of the Blues during the competition which begins on November 20.

“The conditions for organizing the next World Cup in Qatar, which are absolutely disastrous both from a human and an environmental point of view, come into complete contradiction with the values ​​and convictions held by the elected representatives of the majority of the municipal team “, can we read in the message of the town hall.




"The use of modern slavery" denounced

"No event justifies the deplorable ecological consequences that will result from the excess of energy deployed to operate the giant air conditioning systems", adds the municipality, recalling "that the whole world is faced with the challenge of global warming".

The elected officials also denounce the working conditions of the workers during the preparation of this planetary event: "Nor does any sports competition justify the use of modern slavery or the many deaths that the construction of stadiums in the middle of the desert has cost. ".
