In the case of the cat run over by a patrol car, the Detmold public prosecutor's office has initiated investigations against two police officers.

These are the driver and the passenger of the patrol car who had run over the animal, as a spokesman for the authorities said on request on Monday.

Investigated for violating the Animal Welfare Act.

Two witnesses have already been heard.

The "Bild" newspaper had previously reported.

The police said a driver had called the police to Barntrup in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Lippe because he said he had hit a cat.

A veterinarian could not be reached quickly and early in the morning, according to the police.

A shot from the service weapon, as is usual in such cases, would have been too dangerous in this case.

The cat was lying on hard ground, so the risk of a ricochet was too great.

The police officers would not have wanted to move the cat either because of the serious injuries.

The officers deliberately ran over the seriously injured cat with their patrol car to put them out of their misery.

A local resident reported the police.

The incident happened at the end of August near Barntrup (Lippe district).
