According to authorities in the city of Izhevsk, several people were killed and injured when shots were fired in a Russian school on Monday.

According to Russian media, the Interior Ministry of the Udmurt Republic spoke of six dead and 20 injured.

"Today in Udmurtia there was a tragedy in Izhevsk at school 88. An unidentified person broke into the school and killed a guard, that's already known," said Governor Alexander Brechalov.

"There are child casualties and injuries," he said.

The perpetrator killed himself, as confirmed by the region's interior ministry.

There was initially no information about the background to the crime.

In Russia there have already been multiple rampages at educational institutions with many dead and injured.
