Hurricane Fiona made landfall in eastern Canada early Saturday in the province of Nova Scotia with winds exceeding 144 kilometers per hour, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) announced.

"Fiona is expected to affect parts of Atlantic Canada today as a powerful hurricane-force cyclone and significant impacts are expected due to high winds, storm surge and heavy rains," according to the NHC.
